Types of Natural Stone

The first step in proper stone care and maintenance is to understand its geological classification and composition. Natural Stone includes various nature-made mineral substances. These stand in contrast to any synthetic or manufactured stone products. Common natural stone flooring includes slate, marble, quartzite, limestone, travertine, granite, and sandstone—each of which has slightly different properties.

types of natural stone

Calcareous Stones

Marble, limestone, travertine, and onyx are examples of calcareous stones. These types of stones are composed of Calcium Carbonate which is sensitive to acidic solutions. Mild non-acidic cleaners are recommended.

Siliceous Stones

Quartz, feldspar, and mica are examples of this type of stone. Siliceous stones are generally resistant to most acids found in kitchen settings. However, acidic cleaners are still not recommended. These stones may contain trace levels of minerals that are acid sensitive. Mild non-acidic cleaners are recommended.

The chart below will be a helpful guide in determining your stone type.

CLEANING NATURAL STONE

  • Use a clean rag mop on floors and a soft cloth for other surfaces.
  • Clean stone surfaces with a neutral cleaner, stone soap, or a mild liquid dishwashing detergent and warm water.
  • Rinse surfaces thoroughly after washing with the soap solution and dry with a soft cloth; Change the rinse water frequently.

SMART CLEANING TIPS

BATHROOMS | Reduce soap scum in showers by using a squeegee after each use. Remove soap scum using a non-acidic soap scum remover. Alternatively, you can create a mixture of ammonia and water. Use approximately a 1/2 cup of ammonia to a gallon of water. Use approximately a 1/2 cup of ammonia to a gallon of water.

OUTDOOR POOLS, PATIOS, & HOT TUB AREAS | Flush the area with clear water and use a mild bleach solution to remove algae or moss.

PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE

DUST MOPPING | Use a clean, non-treated dry dust mop on interior floors often and as needed.

MATS/RUGS | Places mats or rugs inside and outside an entrance. This helps to reduce the tracking of sand, dirt, and grit into your home that scratch the stone floor. Be sure that the underside of the mat or rug is a slip-resistant surface.

VACUUMS | Some natural stones scratch easily. So, it’s important to inspect wheels and attachments. Make sure they are not damaged or worn.
